In true Explore style we travel to the less touristy bits in search of activity and authentic experiences which can be enjoyed together as a family – none of the all inclusive’s here and no sign of a kids club either, there’s even a free day for that all important family time and you’ll stay in the most welcoming, characterful and extremely comfortable hotels – pool and spa anyone?

Surf’s up – Take part in a surfing lesson at one of Portugal’s premier surfing spots, staying in a charming family run boutique hotel

Nature – Get away from the crowds as we explore the rugged scenery of the north, spend a day exploring the beautiful valley of Sistelo and cool off taking a refreshing dip in the river

Taste of adventure – Try river rafting, a thrilling 1.5km zip wire line (yes, it really is that long!), tree top challenge walk, via ferrata and hiking

Food and wine – Adults can taste the famous port (kids get a non-alcoholic alternative) during a tour of the cavern like cellars, watch Pastel de nata being prepared in a local bakery and then sample (naturally!) – straight from the oven!

Why book this trip

Portugal has always been a popular family destination, whilst most opt for the tourist beaches of the Algarve, the north of the country is often overlooked.

Not only does northern Portugal offer great surfing beaches, it’s less crowded and offers great value for money compared to many other European destinations. Being a relatively compact country we are able to combine the vibrant city of Porto, the natural beauty around Arcos de Valdevez and beach time on Atlantic ocean (where its possible to extend your holiday), without the feeling of rushing around too much.

Finally the hotels we use on this trip are excellent, all chosen for their character and comfort. Whereas many small group family holiday companies operating in Portugal have opted for budget range hotels and guesthouses, the hotels on this trip really compliment the whole experience.
